Barcelona - La Cassola

This place we wandered by on our first day shuffling through the Gothic Area. It was already packed with locals, no room for two more.. so we made a vague mental note where it was, and then later in the week spent quite a bit of looping time in the alleys til we found it. They seem to be open mainly for lunch - and so serve mainly menu del dia. This is the set menu that restaurants in Spain are required by law to serve so people who are working can afford to eat well during the day. Usually you can get a three course lunch from eight euro up. Many places, such as this wee gem, have several menus on different levels. I think mine was 10. Quoc's a bit more.

Baked artichokes. They were so tasty. I asked the woman working there is they used any water, and she said no... just olive oil, garlic, herbs. That's it. It didn't hurt that the artichokes we saw in all the markets there would take your eye out with their freshness.

Sliced raw and marinated cod with olive oil, herbs, and tomato confit.

Quoc's main. Confit of duck.

Mine's a braised pork cheek. It was mainly the rich sticky meat attached to the jaw. Sweet, chewy, soft.

I did it justice. There was a tooth attached.

Classic Crema Catalana.

And a rich chocolate mousse.
